Sahara Dust Outbreak, 26 February - 1 March, 2000

NAAPS/SeaWiFS Comparison

Last updated March 2, 2000

Summary:

An unusually strong Azores High has produced summer-like surface wind conditions (strong easterlies) over North Africa in winter and the associated dust production. The analyses of 500 mb heights, sea level pressure, and surface wind anomalies by NOAA's Climate Diagnostics Center reveal these conditions: An unusually large event, or series of events, occurred between 24 February and 29 February, and may continue.
