Saudia Arabia Dust Storm, January 28-29, 2003

MODIS True Color Image Dr. S. Miller, of the NRL Satellite Group brings to our attention a dust storm over the Persian Gulf:
NPS AVHRR aerosol optical depth retrieval Mr. A. Kuciauskas, of the NRL Satellite Group provides this analysis of aerosol optical depth for 0637Z 29 January, 2003. However, for these high optical depth values, the absorption, linear single scatter, and sphericity assumptions may be compromised. Regardless, the analysis shows that strong gradients in dust concentration are present in the vicinity of Qatar.
NPS AVHRR aerosol optical depth retrieval for 1058Z 29 January, 2003. The same caveat applies.

Surface Observations loop shows dust obs. on 28th and 29th. Look for cyan-colored symbols: these mean dust or other aerosol.

SeaWiFS loop

NOGAPS weather loop shows strong westerly and southwesterly winds over much of the Arabian Peninsula on the 27th and 28th. Look for orange and red shading in lower-right panel: these mean high wind stress, a requirement for dust lifting.

NAAPS simulation loop shows dust lifted on 28th (orange and red shading in lower-left panel); dust over gulf on 29th (yellows in upper-left panel). The loop shows both localy generated dust and dust advected from the Sahara.
