Qatar dust

Iran dust
International Space Station photo on 2004 02 15 at 1311Z from Saudi Arabia looking east towards the Persian Gulf and Qatar and U.A.E coastlines. Qatar runs from the middle of the left (north) edge of the image (southward) towards the center of the image. NASA Reference International Space Station photo on 2004 02 15 at 1137Z from Pakistan looking west across the southern tip of the Dasht-e Lut with the Hamune Jaz Murian basin along the left (southern) edge of the image and the Straight of Hormuz in the upper-left (southwest) corner. The dust is originating near Rigan due to flow through a gap in the Kuh-e Jebal Baraz. NASA Reference

Both of these events have been forecasted by COAMPS/dust with remarkable accuracy 36 hours in advance. NAAPS also captured the Qatar event but NOGAPS underestimated the winds behind the Bam event. Below we present loops of the dynamical forcing (from NOGAPS), surface observations and satellite analyses of the events, followed by the COAMPS and NAAPS dust simulations.

You will find it convenient to step through the loops one image at a time by using the and buttons.
