Description of Composite Plots of NAAPS with TOMS, NOAA, SeaWiFS, GOES, WF-ABBA and/or Surface Observations

Last Updated 18 January, 2000

Data from NAAPS, TOMS AI (aerosol index), SeaWiFS, GOES, NOAA AOD (aerosol optical depth), WF-ABBA and/or surface observations are presented in a 4-panel plots.

WORLD PLOT:

Top Left: GSFC/TOMS aerosol residual for the world. Data are valid for the time of the overpass, or roughly noon LOCAL TIME, so it is not valid for any one particular time, eg 1200Z.
Top Right: NAAPS optical depths for sulfate, dust, and smoke. To simulate the age of the TOMS and NOAA data, we use the 00Z NAAPS simulation for 90-180E, the 06Z simulation for 00-90E, the 12Z simulation for 90-00W, and the 18Z simulation for 180-80W. This compositing of the data significantly improves the comparison.
Bottom Left: SeaWiFS visible imagery (multi-channel product). Data are valid for the time of the overpass, or roughly noon LOCAL TIME, so it is not valid for any one particular time, eg 1200Z. Images come from SeaWiFS Interactive Region Browser.
Bottom Right: NOAA/NESDIS aerosol optical depth for the world. Data are valid for the time of the overpass, or roughly noon LOCAL TIME, so it is not valid for any one particular time, eg 1200Z.

SOUTHWEST ASIA and NORTH AMERICA PLOTS:

Top Left: Same as WORLD plots.
Top Right: Same as WORLD plots.
Bottom Left: Surface observations of smoke, dust, and haze for the entire day.
Bottom Right: SeaWiFS visible imagery (multi-channel product) as described above.

EAST ASIA PLOT:

Top Left: NAAPS optical depths for sulfate (reds), dust (greens), and smoke (blues).
Top Right: TOMS AI as described above.
Bottom Left: Surface concentration of dust (micro-g / m^3)
Bottom Right: Surface observations of smoke, dust, and haze for the 6-hour period.

CARIBBEAN PLOT Version 1:

Top Left: Same as WORLD plots.
Top Right: Same as WORLD plots.
Bottom Left: GOES East 1745 GMT visible image, as processed by NRL/Monterey Satellite Group .
Bottom Right: SeaWiFS visible imagery (multi-channel product) as described above.

CARIBBEAN PLOT Version 2:

Top Left: Same as WORLD plots.
Top Right: Same as WORLD plots.
Bottom Left: WF-ABBA fire locations converted to smoke flux on a 1x1 degree grid.
Bottom Right: SeaWiFS visible imagery (multi-channel product) as described above.
