On January 21,2005 a MOA between Naval Research Laboratory Marine Meteorology Division, Naval Postgraduate School, Fleet Numerical
Meteorology and Oceanography Center, Defense Language Institute, and Defense Manpower Data Center Monterey Bay was signed
to inaugurate the Monterey Peninsula DoD-Net.

This dedicated network, in development over the last few years, uses optical fiber provided by the City of Monterey. It interconnects all the participating DoD organizations at Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) speeds. The DoD-Net infrastructure will serve as a pathway for voice, video, and data circuits serving DoD networks and agencies. Each network circuit will be established as an isolated, point-to-point circuit.

A DoD-Net management board will be formed with members from each participating DoD organization and will meet periodically. Its
responsibilities will include management of the network and planning expansion of coverage and capabilities. The DoD-Net is in its infancy.
Organizations are just beginning to utilize and realize its full potential.

Some suggestions for future uses are:

  • Provide access to potential backup sites to aid in the development of disaster recovery plans;
  • Provide an infrastructure for testing IP version 6 (mandated by the DoD for use by 2008); and, provide an alternative to local SIPRNet connections.
