New Satellite Products over CONUS

NRL has teamed with the National Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Integrated Program Office (IPO) to develop "NexSat"-a public-domain web site highlighting satellite products from new sensors and platforms, with coverage over the continental United States. Through a combination of operational and research-grade satellites, NexSat demonstrates capabilities anticipated from the Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (VIIRS) sensors slated to fly operationally aboard the NPOESS later this decade. The NexSat product line includes VIIRS-equivalent true color city zooms, convection, fire, cirrus, dust, contrails, cloud/snow, nighttime low clouds, city lights, and cloud property products, and leverages data from NRL numerical weather prediction models and the National Lightning Detection Network. NexSat's audience spans the spectrum from the general public to Homeland Defense, while preparing tomorrow's Navy for the NPOESS era.
