THORPEX, a Global Atmospheric Research Program, is a 10-year (2002-2012) international research program to accelerate improvements in the accuracy of 1 to 14 day weather forecasts for the benefit of society and the economy.
A selection of program goals and status reports is provided at:

As part of THORPEX, NRL-MRY participated in a North Atlantic targeted observing field experiment during October-November 2003, along with other U.S. and European agencies. Special observations taken during the field program include dropsondes deployed by reconnaissance aircraft, rawinsondes, land and ship data, and supplemental satellite observations. The impact of these data is currently being evaluated as part of the NRL 6.1 Predictability program. It is anticipated that additional field observing experiments will take place in other regions as THORPEX continues. The primary NRL objectives in THORPEX are: 1) to test hypotheses for more-optimal configurations of targeted and regular observation data, and 2) to identify the causes and physical mechanisms that limit predictability of high-impact weather events that have the most significant impact on civilian and military activities.
