Radiative Partitioning

All radiation detected by satellite remote sensors passes through the atmosphere with some path length. The atmosphere affects electromagnetic energy through processes of absorption, scattering and reflection. How much these processes affect the radiation along the path to the satellite depends on the path length, the presence of particulates and absorbing gases, and the wavelengths involved. The graphic below shows a simplified idea of how radiation is partitioned in the atmosphere.
